Science Materials: Each student is required to have a science
notebook used for science class only.
Everything is taped into this notebook!!
Students are to report to class with their science folder, a writing utensil
and tape. It is imperative this science
folder is brought to every class and is maintained throughout the year.
Science is taught as instructional sessions. Each A day/B day is numerically designated as a session and it is essential that students label items from each session correctly. This systematic approach avoids confusion especially when absent or preparing for a test. Homework should be completed beneath the day’s instruction/notes and labeled.
Discovery Education:
We will use Discovery Education as our techbook this year. We will also be using Discovery Education for several assignments, readings and homework.
Because your child may be under the age of 13, federal law requires that we notify you of this information. Students will need their CMS identification numbers to log in. Their identification number can be found on their schedules.
Student log in = studentid#_cms

Grading, CMS academic grading is as follows:
Informal Classwork/Homework 35%
Formal Assessments 65%
Extra Credit: Each student is expected to do his or her best work on each assignment. Extra credit is not given in science class.
Grading Scale
A 93-100
B 85-92
C 77-84
D 70-76
F 69
Absent Policy Upon returning to school following an excused absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact his/her teacher to request make-up work. Ideally a student should visit our webpage or visit the classroom the day they return so not to get too far behind. For example, if a student misses Monday (A day) but is in school Tuesday (B day) they should visit the classroom before 9:15 in the morning to get their assignment so to have it ready the next A day. Students are strongly encouraged to check with a buddy for missed assignments and/or to copy missed notes. Our weebly sites are great for determining what topic was covered and what homework was assigned.
Additional Science Time/Computer Time:
Sixth grade science teachers tutor on Tuesday mornings from 8:15-8:45. Students MUST acquire a tutoring “investigation” pass from their teacher prior to attending each week. Each teacher tutors in their classroom. Students may also come in to use a classroom computer during this time.
Classroom Expectations and Procedures
Show respect at all times
Be on time and prepared when class begins
Follow all directions given by the teacher the first time
Do the right thing.
Correction Policy (Retest)
Students are encouraged to review their notes and homework nightly, so that they do their best on all formal assessments.
If the student receives a failing grade on a formal assessment, they can fix the problems that they missed and earn partial credit back (up to an 80%) for the correct answers.
The answers must be written and include an explanation to why the answer is correct on a sheet of notebook paper and stapled to the original test (printed off from discovery ed. Or a blank copy from the teacher).
This must be handed in the next class period.
Students are reminded that it is a privilege to correct their test. If they choose to do so, it is their responsibility to follow through and return it the next class period.

Homework (CHMS) Policy
Homework is a vital extension of the classroom and is an opportunity to practice previously learned material. Students should expect a fair amount of homework daily in math, and language arts as well as science and social studies. Students are held responsible for accuracy and completion of homework assignments.
All homework assigned is due the next class period. The students must be present in class the day the homework is assigned to be held accountable for the next day turn-in. If a student was in class the day the homework was assigned, and does not turn in the homework at the beginning of class, the student will receive a zero. When the student turns in the assignment after the due date, late must be written at the top and the grade will be a 60%. Students will NOT be permitted to return to their locker for forgotten material.
